Noteworthy News 8/6/17

BAPTISM/CONFIRMATION Congratulations to C.J. Horan who was welcomed into the Lord’s family through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and Confirmation at our worship service this morning. Please introduce yourself, and welcome C.J. to the congregation of St. Paul.

FOOD PANTRY The first Sunday of every month is Food Pantry Sunday. Donations received on this day go to benefit the Southeast Linn Comm. Center Food Pantry. Be sure to pick up an envelope in the Narthex, and place your donation in the offering plate during worship.

FELLOWSHIP Thank you to the Freiburgers for providing fellowship refreshments today. Volunteers are needed to provide/serve fellowship on Sunday, September 17. The signup sheet is on the wall near the counter in the fellowship hall.

FOREVER YOUNG will meet for a potluck this Tuesday, August 8 at 12pm. 

SAUERKRAUT DAYS in Lisbon will be held August 1112, and our church will again be having a food booth. We need some items donated, and cash donations are appreciated. Cash donations can be marked as such and put in the collection plate or given to Willis Wulf. Signup sheets for working and for donating items are on the table in the Narthex. Contact Willis Wulf for more information.

HIGHER THINGS THANK YOU BRUNCH has been rescheduled for August 20. The SH Youth Committee will be Sunday, August 27 after the worship service.

YOUTH SUMMER FUNDRAISER The youth are asking congregation members to save their cans and bottles this summer.  There are two options for collection:

You can bring them to church (There is drop off area near the big freezer in the room off of the kitchen.)

If you have some that need to be picked up, you can let a youth know or text Sonya at 319-360-8521, and we will arrange a time to pick them up.  Thank you for your support!!

LWR KITS The Priscilla Guild is now collecting items for school care kits. The list of needed items for the kits is on the flyer near the collection basket in the Narthex. There is now a list of all items needed for each LWR kit (1/2 sheet of paper) on the table near the basket. Please take one for reference while shopping for items.

TRAVELING LUTHER As you travel around the local area, across the country, or abroad, bring Traveling Martin Luther with you.  Take photos of him on the journey anywhere the Good News of God’s free gift of grace can be shared.  We’ll post the pictures at church and on the St. Paul Facebook page.  You can pick up your Traveling Luther from the folder hanging on the divider wall to Sonya’s office. Take a look at the divider wall to see some of the places Luther has traveled this summer!


Congregation Picnic and Pool Party TODAY
Make plans to join us for a congregation picnic and pool party today at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca.  We will start to gather at 4:00 p.m. for swimming and socializing.  We will plan to eat around 6:00.  Burgers, hot dogs, drinks and table service will be provided.  Please bring a side dish to share.

If you plan to attend, please sign up on the table in the Narthex so we can plan for an appropriate amount of food.  Directions and maps to the camp are on the table as well. 

Sunday School Starts on Sept. 10, Teachers Needed
Mark your calendars.  Sunday School will resume on Sept. 10.  We are looking for team teachers for each class grades preschool through high school, as well as help with the opening and large group activities for elementary students.  Each position will be shared, so no one individual will be committed to teaching every week.  Please sign up on the signup sheet in the Narthex if you are interested in helping.  Let me know if you have any questions or need guidance as to which position might suit you best.

If any youth are interested in helping in the stand let me know. High school youth can just sign up. If any Middle School youth are interested in working, please let me know and we can work together.

End-of-the-summer Event
MS and HS youth – (RSVP to Sonya by August 6) We are having our End-of-the-summer event on Tuesday, August 15. We’ll meet at the church at 2:30pm and head over to Lake Macbride State Park for an afternoon of swimming. Bring a few bucks for snacks. After swimming, we will plan on cooking out around 5pm. Look forward to seeing everybody!!

Higher Things Thank You Brunch
The group that attending Higher Things in Indiana this summer wants to thank you! Please join us for brunch after church on Sunday, August 20 (rescheduled from August 6). There will be a short presentation on the trip as well.

LWML FALL RETREAT The retreat will be held Sept. 8-9 at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca, and the theme is “Unchangeable God in a Changing World.” Registration forms are available in the Narthex. Forms and payment are due August 25. For more information, go to 

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT St. Paul’s Lutheran Chapel in Iowa City has a part-time opening for Director of Development. This position is vital to the ongoing growth and maturity of the Chapel and serves as the ambassador, organizer, and doer for programs and donor relations. Copies of the job description are on the table in the Narthex.
