Noteworthy News 11/26/17

BAPTISM Congratulations to Graham Johnson who was welcomed into the Lord’s family through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at our worship service this morning. Parents are Ryan and Megan Johnson, and brother, Liam.

MUFFINS FOR MITES Please join us in fellowship today as the Priscilla Guild sponsors “Muffins for Mites”. Your fellowship donations will go to support the continued mission work of the LWML.

LIVING NATIVITY We will once again have our living nativity as part of Mt. Vernon’s Uptown Magical Night event this Thursday, November 30 at the gazebo in Memorial Park. Performances will be at 6:15 & 7:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help take roles or sing with the choir. Rehearsal will be TONIGHT at the church at 6:30pm. Volunteers are also needed to provide cookies and help serve refreshments at the Visitors’ Center.  There are signup sheets on the table in the Narthex. DECORATE CHURCH FOR CHRISTMAS We will be decorating the church for Christmas on Monday, Nov. 27 from 6-9pm. All congregation members are invited to help.

MEN’S BREAKFAST will be next Saturday, Dec. 2 at 8am at the church. Contact Jeff Adrian for more information. All men of the congregation are invited!

CHRISTMAS CAROLING We plan to sing at Hallmark following worship next Sunday, Dec. 3 then gather back at the church for a soup luncheon. After eating, we will carpool to various homes for caroling. If you know of someone who could use a little pick-me-up, let Pastor Hansen know so we can carol for them. There is a signup sheet in the Narthex to provide food for the soup luncheon. 

ADVENT SERVICES and meals will be on Wednesdays, Dec. 6, 13, and 20. A meal will be served by the youth (freewill offering) at 5:15pm, and the Advent service will be at 6:30pm. Please note: communion will not be celebrated at these 3 services.

MISSION OF HOPE We will be serving the noon meal at Mission of Hope on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Volunteers are need to provide/prepare/serve the meal. There will be signup sheets in the Narthex soon. THANK YOU to all who gave toward purchasing new bowls for Mission of Hope. The total given was $256.

NEWS FROM THE YOUTH COORDINATOR 

Middle and High School Youth Christmas Party
Our Christmas party will be held on Sunday, December 3. Highschool Youth: We will gather at the church at 4pm and head to Target to buy Christmas gifts. After that we will g to the Margheim’s home. Middle School youth: We will gather at the Margheim’s. Please arrive at 6pm. Once everyone is there we will wrap presents (if needed) and share a Christmas dinner. We’ll also have a White Elephant gift exchange (something funny or unique, this should be something that could be held on to if so desired). We will also read the Nativity and play games if we have time. We will finish up around 8pm.

NEWS FROM THE FAMILY LIFE COORDINATOR

Christmas Program – Dec. 10The children and youth invite the congregation and their guests to their Christmas program, “Starry, Starry Night” at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 10. The program will be followed by a soup supper for all.  If you would like to help out with the soup supper, there is a signup sheet on the table in the Narthex.  We will have one Saturday practice on the morning of Dec. 9 at 9:00 a.m.  All participants are encouraged to attend the Saturday practice.

Youth Musicians Wanted for Christmas Program
Children and youth have the opportunity to share their musical talents at the beginning of the Christmas program on Dec. 10.  They may play their instruments, share a piano piece, or sing a Christmas carol.  The youth may select their own music, though we ask that it be appropriate for a church setting.  There is a signup sheet on the table in the Narthex.  Talk to me if you have any questions.

POINSETTIAS Once again we are accepting monetary donations to purchase poinsettias for the church for Christmas. Please make checks payable to St. Paul with “flowers” in the memo line. Please place donations in the envelope in the secretary’s office by Sunday, Dec. 10. 

FELLOWSHIP One to two families are needed to provide/serve fellowship on Sunday, Dec. 17. The signup sheet is on the wall near the counter in the fellowship hall.

ADVENT DEVOTIONALS Paper Advent devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries are available in the Narthex. You may also read the devotions online, subscribe to having them sent to you in emails, or listen to audio podcasts. Go to www.lhm.org/advent for more information.

TERRI LYNN NUTS AND CANDIES are here. Make checks payable to the Priscilla Guild and place in the wooden lock box. Proceeds go toward missions. 

NURSERY Additional volunteers are needed to help staff the church nursery during the Sunday School hour on Sunday mornings. Signup sheets to volunteer and a calendar for Sunday morning availability are on the table in the Narthex. Contact Nicki Hanselman for more information: 624-7179, hoosiers@southslope.net. 

FUTURE CHURCH NEEDS There are papers on the table in the Narthex that have a list of possible future needs/ideas for St. Paul. Please take one, write down any comments or ideas and put in Willis Wulf’s church mailbox, and he will then determine if a committee should be formed. 

PRAYER CHAIN UPDATE Here at St. Paul we have an email prayer chain. There will be a sheet in the Narthex through the end of the year. If you would like to be added, please write your name and email on the sheet, or if you would like to be removed, please cross off your name. Any questions, please contact Tracy. 

COOKIE WALK The annual cookie walk at Our Redeemer in Iowa City will be Saturday, Dec. 2. See the flyer on the bulletin board in the Narthex for more information. 

PROJECT 60 The Lisbon School will once again be hosting the Project 60 Christmas dinner on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 11am-2pm. The dinner is for seniors 60 and older in the Lisbon/Mt. Vernon area. There will be a meal, entertainment and Bingo. There is no cost, but donations are welcome. Reservations are appreciated but not required. (Contact Cathy Whitman at 455-2106 to make reservations.)
